Inspired by the Valley of San Pellegrino
Time has drawn to a standstill in this little town with its century old traditions, secrets and a story of its own, awaiting to be revealed.
It is hard to say how far back we need to look in order to relate the story of San Pellegrino and its mineral, botanicals, flowers, myths and herbal medicines.
Imagine a green haven suspended between history and fantasy, where man and Nature clashed before they could live in peace.
In this wild, narrow valley, protected by steep slopes and ravines, nomadic people, who were just settling down, dreamt of a plant that could heal every malady. They sought a natural remedy to the fatigue brought on by long, weary days spent in summer pastures and also to wounds received while defending newly conquered boundaries.
Who can establish exactly how far truth mingles with myth, and legend with reality. All we know is that San Pellegrino's origins are ancient, unique and mysterious.
12.000 years ago trails were marked along those rugged slopes - to date they can still be used. At that time, hidden and protected by steep rock faces and dells, people dug with metal tools, carved instruments in flint, pastured their flock and fought to defend their home, families and life itself, as seen in every tradition.
The Orobians were courageous and proud mountain folk, devoted to their land, daily tasks and to a simple life where every action was essential to their needs. For all that concerned health and wealth, they held on to the secrets of a tradition based on their natural resources
It would be wonderful to imagine that herbal remedies were rooted in the tradition of a happy and peaceful people who, moved by profound respect towards their own bodies and a quest for knowledge, devoted themselves entirely to discovering the potential powers of herbs.
Reality, on the contrary, embraces centuries of privation and a standard of living barely suitable for survival.
These valley folk decided to suit their immediate needs by learning their lessons from Nature, a loving mother who could give so much and withdraw it all in a moment.
They discovered that flowers held useful remedies for their hard way of life.
Suddenly these wonderful ancient tribes vanished into thin air, swallowed up by the very mountains they belonged to, leaving no trace behind. Silence enveloped their disappearance, making it virtually impossible to reconstruct the course of events.
The very mountains they loved so much seem to hold them in one last, silent embrace, in the depths of an unexplored dell. The legend is all that still lingers behind; together with botanical knowledge we almost risked loosing. The fact remains that the Orobians, like all other Celtic tribes, were ruled by superstition, religion and imagination. This feature was most evident at twilight when night moved in and science was forgotten in the name of magic.
The following millenniums witnessed the movement of a variety of races, culture, myths and religion in these specific areas. Experience and tradition merged into one, to make us aware of the hidden powers of herbs. These secrets are what inspired the Elariia product range.
Ligurians, Etruscans, Welsh, Romans and Franks settled in this land, from time to time, leaving "footprints in the sands of time".
During the last Ice Age, a huge ice cap formed a ring around these valleys, leaving only the land's flora intact.
Everything disappeared within a radius of hundreds of miles, for a very long period that seemed unending.
The land became a frozen desert.
When the snow melted and warm winds blew from the valley, the land revealed to the world all it had kept hidden in its bosom for millenniums.
A perfect, extremely precious botanical island emerged from this world of ice - a floral jewel with species that were unique, a natural oasis that made San Pellegrino the "pearl of the Orobian Mountains".
The Primula Albensis, the Saxifraga Presolanensis, the Viola Camollia and the extremely rare orchid Cypripedium calceolum are only some of the specimens one can admire along the "Flower Trail".
Today San Pellegrino is very different to what it was once. The village has grown, developed, come to know progress and fame and has experienced the luxuries of worldly life. Nevertheless, a trace of the ancient past still remains - the wisdom of a tradition never really forgotten, enriched by time and improved by centuries of research. This is the concept we wish to convey with Elariia.

A hidden path that works its way along the slopes to a height of 609 feet, an ancient trail that keeps watch over the valley, grants a peep at a world that is no more.
Today, a walk through the "Flower Trail" is like peeping through time and history into a world full of suggestions that are hard to forget.
The painter's palette that in spring and summer surrounds the entire trail is something magical and suggestive. The intense red of peonies, the delicate pink of violets and the bright red of Taraxum officinale are just a few colors in this amazing microcosm that man, since 1700, has learned to make use of, always with deep respect for the environment.
